Page 3 of 3 Growing Opposition One of the key factors in the Drug War is that the only people publicly opposed to it at first, were those who used drugs. Now, as the government gets more desperate, and the policies, laws, and tactics get more and more right wing, there are folks like me who don't use any illegal drugs whatsoever, there are the sick and dying who have found relief in Cannabis, there's the food industry who know that hemp is a rich food source, and countless others who are moved by the injustice of it all. Even the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers are calling for and end to the Drug War, the Supreme Court itself is calling for the removal of mandatory minimums, prison systems are pleading for the Federal government to stop putting non-violent drug offenders in prison, states are legalizing medical marijuana, the "Truth in Trials Act" is being introduced after the Ed Rosenthal debacle, celebrities with voices that reach millions are preaching peace and are investing millions in lobbying efforts to decriminalize marijuana. In a related note, bands are making music in protest of the laws and our government, and the government has responded by teaming up with ClearChannel, who now owns most of the major radio stations and venues, requiring bands sign agreements that they won't give any anti-war speeches! - All this while the Rave Act was added onto the Amber Alert Act right under our noses making live concerts virtually illegal now if the government has a problem with them! Next up is the "Clean Up" act which allows searches without search warrants, and the "Patriot Act II" which will make the laws of "Patriot Act" permanent instead of ending in 2005. I am convinced that the opposition will continue to grow, and the government can only continue to ignore its people for so long. They've already proven that they don't care what people have to say when they invaded Iraq, making us and the world feel powerless, but instilling a desire to help change the injustice that is invading our backyards. Where exactly are those weapons of mass destruction which justified the invasion of Iraq? In Conclusion As a result, I think Salvia divinorum is still legal because someone, somewhere realizes what massive repercussions lie waiting if a hasty move were made in a system already feeling the weight of its own failed policies. But, I also think that it partly because many of us believe in the power of the spirit to change the dream. For example: If you think one person can't affect a change, just imagine what the world would be like if there were no opposition whatsoever to the failed Drug War or any of the policies and laws you disagreed with. The government is doing what they can in face of the opposition, who makes their job increasingly difficult. Use your voice and the internet to educate and inform. Many websites were inspired by the outrageous actions of the government as we realized that we can't be afraid to act against, and to spread the word about what we believe in. If we sit around doing nothing; the government automatically wins. Bullied into non-action and thinking that we are powerless is what they dream of. Positive thought can affect physical changes; it has been conclusively proven over and over again. If it can affect change on a personal level, it must be able to affect change on a global level. At least I can hope. This article courtesy of the good people at IAmShaman.
