Last year while searching the internet for information regarding the monstrose and cristate mutations that occasionally manifest in cacti, I stumbled across a thread in an unlikely forum that had photographs of the most stunning cristate forms of Lophophora williamsii that I had ever seen!Lophophora williamsii var cristata The photos, taken and posted by a man going by the name of Cancerian, were of his own collection and were accompanied by equally rich posts in which he spoke about his experiences grafting and growing both regular and cristate Lophophoras and Trichocerii. Cancerian also shared some of his experiences as a member of the Native American Church, along with a personal philosophy that revealed him to be a thoughtful and entheospective person.

I attempted to contact Cancerian via private message back in August 2004, as I wanted to introduce myself and invite him to visit Edot. I waited quite some time and yet received no response. The months passed, and the not too long ago I returned to the thread in the forum he had posted in, to see if perhaps he had made any new posts since my last visit. To my dismay, I found an announcement made by someone close to him which conveyed the sad news that Joseph Lomahaftewa, who went by the username Cancerian, had passed away.

In heartfelt tribute to Joseph, I am presenting three articles which combine passages of various posts he made alongside photos he posted online between 2003-04. This first article introduces Joseph as Cancerian and focuses on the subject of cristate Lophophoras. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with the world, Joseph Lomahaftewa; your words and wisdom are herein preserved.

I've been following some of the chat regarding peyotyl. I am a Native American and I've been growing peotyl for more than 15 years on the Cochiti Reservation in New Mexico. I've noticed a lot of misinformation out there, so I've decided to step up and offer my knowledge to those of you who desire to walk the Peyote Road. First of all, let me point out that Peyote is a Religious Sacrament, not a quick high for empty-headed hippy kids in the suburbs. It pains me to see people... refer to Peyote as "good shit". Anyhooz, to those of you who respect the spirit of the plant (whatever your race). I will answer any and all technical questions that you pose to me in minute detail. Here are some photos from my garden at Cochiti. You'll want to take special note of the rare mutated peyote in it's "Cristate" phase of growth. Well, I gotta sign off and get some groceries. Remember, those of you who are currently growing the sacrament... you are custodians of a powerful spirit that has guided the peoples of Mexico and the Southern United States since long before white man ever stepped foot in this land. As such, you carry a heavy responsibility and a special blessing. Treat the plant with due respect and be discreet with whomever you discuss the subject. Bless you, friends!
