Just so you know, whichever rootstock you decide to use, it will still take 3-5 years for your peyote to reach full potency. A grafted peyote will "bulk-up" quickly and can grow as large as a twelve year old rooted specimen within a matter of months! The alkaloid content, however, still takes time to build up in the tissues of the peyote. If you would like to experience the communion that one has under the swoon of peyote, perhaps you should try the sacrament San Pedro first. It's a little different from Grandfather Peyote and a little more forgiving, but it is every bit as profound and life-changing. So, yeah... pick up one of those ornamentals and some blue myrtle (Myrtillocactus) and we'll go over the grafting technique. You'll be surprised how confident you will get once you get the "feel" of grafting. Procedure is important, but you will find that the plants will silently speak to you as you get to know them.... each has a unique "personality".

Speaking more on his grafts:My graftstocks were offshoots from larger plants that my grandfather grew from seeds. I just pulled the smaller offshoots away from the larger rooted motherplant and cut these flat for grafting. There wasn't enough tissue left to root, so I dried it for later use. I currently only have grafted specimens. I take the buttons from these and graft them as clones. When the time is right and they have reached the desired size, I will cut some of these grafts away from the San Pedro and root them.

Vibrant green peyote"This is a Lophpophora Williamsii. I placed a quarter and an Icelandic Kroner next to the cactus to give you an idea of its size. When grafted, they tend to grow in vibrant greens. If they were rooted specimens, they would be more of a grey/blue green."
