In this final installment of three articles showcasing the writings of the late Joseph Lomahaftewa, known also as Cancerian, we've collected and are presenting passages which illuminate Joseph's philoshopical and spiritual perspective. He has many interesting things to say about the entheogenic experience, and of the nature of the divine.

Joseph's passing last year was a very unfortunate event for those in the community who knew him, especially for those who knew him personally. May his knowledge and wisdom live on in our hearts and minds.

"Call them Neo-shamans or Cognitive Libertarians or whatever.... point is, they are creating a New Vision of entheogenic plants that may eventually turn the tide and serve to create an environment in which ALL peoples can freely explore the depths of the heart, mind, and spirit."

Speaking of the power of these plants...

These are powerful plants that can change your consciousness forever, even after just one experience! That is a powerful thing, and until the world sees a more responsible use of these plant allies, the governments of the world will continue to suppress their use. People who examine Traditional uses of these plants and develop their own rituals and ceremonies around them are on the ground-level of a new and powerful movement! Call them Neo-shamans or Cognitive Libertarians or whatever.... point is, they are creating a New Vision of entheogenic plants that may eventually turn the tide and serve to create an environment in which ALL peoples can freely explore the depths of the heart, mind, and spirit.

Someone asks regarding methods of ingestion

No, you either ingest the plant fresh, or as a dried "button". It takes different people differing amounts to obtain a clear vision. I've seen men eat in excess of twenty large buttons during the Road Ceremony without reaching the spirit. Other people will be in full spiritual communion after only 6 or 7 dried buttons. In my Church, we make a brew that includes a 50% mix of San Pedro. It's not traditional in the "Quanna Parker" sense, but we all believe a little differently, aye? I've heard people say that they smoked peyote, but I'm guessin' that most of those people are full of it. Peyote is difficult to come by, even for those of us on the Rez, for whom it is legal.

Offers advice to those looking for the experience:

cristate collectionNo, growing Peyote isn't difficult, per se. What it does require is a tremendous amount of patience. If you are eager to experience the mescaline journey, I would recommend that you first try San Pedro. It is legal to purchase and easy to find. Most nurseries carry large specimens for between $60.00-$180.00US. I found a 6ft. specimen of T. pachanoi at a Home Depot in 1998. Since then, I have only found smaller specimens. If you locate one, it's easy enough to make a brew from a 1-3ft. section. Personally, I feel that having a ritual setting is best for this kind of plant. However, if you are going to use the brew alone for the very first time, you can create your own personalized ritual by paying attention to the set and setting. Have a question in mind prior to ingesting the sacrament. Focus your intentions and approach the experience with a sense of reverence. It helps to arrange items of sentimental significance around yourself. Ingesting the brew at sunset is best in my opinion, but an early morning ritual can be beautiful too. You don't need to have some big fancy ceremony with whistles and drums... just don't look at it as a "high". By simply changing your mindset about the cactus and looking at it as a sacrament, you will have a much more valuable and insightful experience. That said, do as you like. Remember that the effects will not kick in for an hour, sometimes two. When gauging the dose, err on the side of MORE. You will not approach a toxic dose... it would take an insane amount to reach that level. The thing that would be unfortunate would be to ingest too little. If the experience agrees with you, then perhaps you should seek out Peyote. If you are meant to have it, it will find its way to you with little effort on your part.
