Dave states, “I do not claim to be an expert on the Huichol or any other culture. I have profound interest and respect for all native cultures. I apologize in advance for any and all possible errors.” The Huichol Indians inhabit the mountains in the Sierra Madre Occidental. For over two thousand years they have made an annual pilgrimage retracing the footsteps of their gods and their ancestors as they re-enact the journey made in the beginning of creation.
This journey covers about three hundred miles and is filled with hazards and starvation the whole way. The destination of their pilgrimage is known as “Wirikuta”, and it is this land where one comes to find out what it is to be Huichol. It is in Wirikuta that the sacred peyote cactus grows and it is also in Wirikuta where the most revered spirits live. To the Huichol peyote is known as the plant of life and it shares a special status beyond that of a plant sacrament. The Huichol believe that peyote's spirit is the same as the revered Deer, and the Corn plant. These three deities share the same essence and are the core of Huichol life. They have depended on the grace of these sacred deities for their survival for thousands of years and continue to do so to this day. In upcoming articles I will further detail the lives and beliefs of the Huichol.....Spencer/crow. That's it, peace be with you and may it all flow smoothly... |
