I have to smile...as I too have read the many stories on the Net about folks who have tried Salvia with no effect, but I attribute that to improper inhalation techniques or a low potency extract. I'm no chemist, but I can tell you that a simple denatured alcohol (ethanol/methanol) extract from Salvia divinorum leaf will definitely cause an effect that is unlike any other...especially in conjunction with other entheogens such as mushrooms. And without exception, chemically extracted SalvinorinA will, with one inhaled hit, shatter any individual into pieces, into the “Salvia world.” The peak of the experience lasts about 3 minutes, with residuals lasting up to an hour...and let me assure you that there was no DMT in the pipe. The effects of Salvinorin A are as strong as any psychedelic I have ever experienced. Read some of the trip reports of this plant and substance on the Lycaeum (Salvia Trip Reports) and you'll see many other such reports. Take a look at Daniel Siebert's pages for more information....

I remember reading that you went through a DMT-making period in your life. What do you think of the DMT/5-MEO-DMT experience?

(Bear:)
DMT taking, not making. I have never done a synthesis of DMT. Nick Sand was a prolific producer of the material in the old days, and all I had to do was purify and crystallize it. I have not had any positive psychic results from 5 substituted (bufotenine) analogs. A mixture of DET with DMT yields a two hour DMT trip.

Wow! That sounds very intense! Was your “freakout” in Muir Beach, as described in Tom Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, as big an event in your life as it is described?

“I never spoke to the man [Tom Wolfe], and I urged the others not to do so unless they could dose the fucker.” - Bear

(Bear:)
Why would you think that Wolfe has the tiniest idea what was going on with us? I never spoke to the man, and I urged the others not to do so unless they could dose the fucker. Wolfe is a stunningly talented, but bitter man, who is able to keenly report the personalities of people he interviews, but always tears any scene he writes about down. I always wondered why he hated the astronauts so much that he wanted to trash them in Right Stuff. Of course he made everything that we were doing seem like a bunch of crap. Muir beach was a cosmic experience for me, for sure, and in total, a very powerful and very growing experience, perhaps one of the most enlightening I have had. Like all these sorts of trips, it was scary at points. So is, I imagine, riding a rocket to the Moon.

(ED:)
Do you see it happening again in the rave scene?

(Bear:)
If by “rave” you mean the Goa-based Techno scene, I must say yes, at least as far as the ravers are using acid. If you mean the aberrant form using MDMA, then definitely no, as MDMA is not a psychedelic, just a brain-damaging analog of amphetamine. A stimulant plus the toxicity of nutmeg oil, which causes irreversible damage to the liver and the brain.
