The Ibogaine Story: Report on the Staten Island Project Print

Perhaps a dry read for persons looking for instant Ibogaine-ONLY information, wanting to learn “Just The Facts, Ma'am” about the all-natural addiction-terminating treatment from the Tabernanthe iboga plant. However, from Autonomedia, a good bit of esoteric subject matter and anti-governmental propaganda is common, and should be expected.

Do not let the above paragraph deter you from pursuing The Ibogaine Story, though! I was thinking the book would be a flat out explanation of the history and usage (both native and more current) of the Tabernanthe iboga plant, and on the healing medicinal properties of the plants’ extract, Ibogaine, but there was more in store for my youthfully ignorant mind! While it delves deeply into these facts, the political perspective throughout the entire book is what threw me. I was not expecting it at all - as I should have. However, once the reader allows him/her self to be open to the political side of the sacred plants’ history, the book flows very well. The Ibogaine Story expertly introduces many, if not all, of the players (major and minor) in the field - such as Howard Lotsof and Deborah Mash- giving biographies of these visionary individuals at the beginning of the book, making them more familiar to the layman throughout the text. Six detailed chapters (and 125+ pages) of appendices are found at the rear of the book. Imagine a book which lists the standard bibliographies for works in the same field of discussion. Well, the appendices for The Ibogaine Story read more like a collection of “recommended reading” on the subject matter. Some of it dealing directly with Ibogaine, and other parts just barely dealing with a small political aspect of the Staten Island Project. This enormously information-packed book is so comprehensive that is may throw some with a mild interest in the subject. However, if you have any true desire to learn more about Ibogaine, the War On Drugs, the Yippies, the identity of Soma, or general ethnobotany or chemistry you need this book.
