ENCRYPTION AND DRUG DEALERS
Computer technology has progressed enough that Internet communications have become the most secure way for large drug outfits to talk business, said Don Daufenbach, a U.S. Customs special agent.
If I were a large-scale smuggler, I would have a secure server, with encrypted information flowing over the Internet, he said. When these guys start using PGP encryption, there's no way of knowing what they're up to.
Encrypted e-mail, said Daufenbach, is more secure than the telephone, allowing drug cartels to discuss, say, where a shipment might arrive in the United States, without fear of detection.
You know this goes on every day, but law enforcement hasn't stumbled on it yet, he said. Its the perfect method of commerce.

Sec. 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.
