Hay Ed, SWIM has sum of the first copies of High Times (like 1971 er sumthin', and back then, the high in "High Times" must of meant coke, not pot. There is snow on every page, and alot of the article seemed to believe that coke would be legal soon, along with pot.

I guess they were wrong!!!

High Times started the rumor? I don't think so.

The Anarchist Cookbook by William Powell, copyright 1971. The following is copied verbatim from page 55 of this book:

"Bananas

Believe it or not, bananas do contain a small quantity of Musa Sapientum bananadine, which is a mild, short-lasting psychedelic. There are much easier ways of getting high, but the great advantage to this method is that bananas are legal.

1) Obtain 15 lbs. of ripe yellow bananas.
2) Peel all 15 lbs. and eat the fruit. Save the peels.
3) With a sharp knife, scrape off the insides of the peels and save the scraped material.
4) Put all scraped material in a large pot and add water. Boil for three to four hours until it has attained a solid paste consistency.
5) Spread this paste on cookie sheets, and dry in an oven for about 20 minutes to a half hour. This will result in a fine black powder. Makes about one pound of bananadine powder. Usually one will feel the effects of bananadine after smoking three or four cigarettes."

Obviously, this rumor was popular enough by the early 70's that William Powell decided to include it in his infamous book. I hope High Times didn't take credit for this recipe.

I've seen all kinds of articles saying that it works, and I don't know who it is that keeps perpetuating the rumor. I've had people tell me to my face, quite heatedly, that it's true.

High Times may have printed it, but I believe its origins rest in an issue of Rolling Stone that predates the High Times article.

And never, ever, EVER believe anything that is printed in the Anarchist Cookbook.

Nice to find an old thread like this. A guy in high school sold me "bananadine" and I smoked it and I got incredably high... or am I just bullshitting you? he he he!
Let's say we wanted to perpatuate the hoax, what might we say?
1. "the bananas have to be in a certain state of ripeness in order for bananadine to be extracted!"
2. "You aren't REALLY supposed to boil it for that long, you need to heat it at a certain temperature within a very small threshhold or the bananadine will be destroyed!"
3. "You're actually supposed to use green plantains!"
4. YOUR TURN!!!
