"This illusion was first demonstrated by Diana Deutsch at the University of California, San Diego. Building on the stereo effect described above, the recording features overlapping sequences of repeating words or phrases, located in different regions of stereo space. As you listen to it, you'll start to pick out specific phrases. However, none of the phrases are really there. Your brain is constructing them, in a bid to make sense of a meaningless noise. Indeed, you may find that the phrases you hear are related to what's on your mind - for example, people who are dieting often hear phrases associated with food." --from http://www.newscientist.com/article/...llusions-.html

Pretty intense. You can really screw with people's heads with this stuff. Makes me wonder if this has anything to do with all the 'backwards recorded messages' I know some were engineered, but quite possibly some of them are completely by chance and our brains just pick out the messages we hope to hear. This happens with visual stuff to, we try and make sense out of chaos, hence people seeing faces in their every day breakfast, pieces of wood, toenails... etc.. etc..

^ Yes, the brain tries to make sense out of stimuli it's exposed to. You receive clues and your brain pieces them together to form a reality you can accept. What's freaky is being alone in the deep forest and hearing a sound you have never heard before. You have no reference and nothing to associate it with.

My impressions of the sounds:
1. road ray
2. count down
3. blank blank

A big part of what makes them "salviaesque" to me is that if I listen to them for the full duration of the audio files, the imaginary words/phrases gradually transform as my mind wanders, so what I hear at first is completely different from what I hear at the end or in the middle.

I only listened to it for a bit cos I thought it was creepy...

Its the same with alarms clocks, I find the cracks in the sound pulses and get almost hypnotized with the multiple layers and folding of the sound as it resonates in the room.

My family however, only hear an awful racket and shout at me to turn it off....

Strange how to me its so much more than what they can hear

Hmmmm, I was checking around seeing who's on the entheogen website, and I noticed that there were at least 4 guests reading this thread. I don't even remember this thread when it first showed up.

Anyway, I listened to the first example and it was interesting. I have my pc hooked up to my tv. I also have some infrared headphones for my tv. So I'm listening to the first example over the tv speakers, and I hear the word 'lovely' over and over again. Then I put on the headphones and the actual words are totally different. Pretty cool, but not all that salviaesque.
*edit* listened again 30 minutes later----no longer hear the word 'lovely'.

A few months ago I got into binaural beats (listening to two tones at the same time, each slightly different). If they are separated by 7 hz, then you hear a 7 hz subsonic tone. Supposedly, the 7hz tone will help put you in a meditative state of mind. It put me to sleep. I did happen to download an hour long ambient type binaural beat mp3 from amazon called 'Awakened Mind System 2'. I can't even hear the binaural beats on it. I don't even care about the binaural beats. It's just a damn good wavy, trippy, mellow piece of music. SWIM listened to it a few times while doing salvia, and the plant and the music were a complete match. They seemed to be made for each other.

reminds me of "White Noise", the movie.

It wasn't a great movie, but it was an interesting concept.

This material sheds a new light on it... listen to enough static, will you hear your dead wife's voice?

Or just enema enema enema... it's kinda like a Rorschach test. Here is a blob, now reveal your inner psyche...
