A few enlightening questions for all of you. -
1st November 2009, 10:49 PM
I would like everybody to seriously consider these questions. Please post your answers only after serious contemplation. Of course, not only should these questions be considered, but you should attempt to actually locate the supposed positions. Answers to these questions are not valid if you only draw on intellectual knowledge (this isn't really the point of this thread).
If you know what I'm hinting at please keep it to yourself for the meanwhile. Please only post the answers. I will not mention my answers just yet because I do not want to skew the results. This will be very rewarding for those of you that attempt this exercise in earnest.
--------------------------------------------
The questions:
1. Attempt to locate the position of your inner voice. Where is it located?
2. Attempt to locate the position of the point in your brain where thoughts arise/manifest (if such a point exists). Where is it located?
3. Attempt to locate the position of the point where thoughts are judged. Where is it located?
4. Are these positions the same, or are they different? Which are different, and which are alike?
--------------------------------------------
A small exercise to help with this:
Still your mind, think only a single thought (it must be a statement), and try to locate the position from whence this thought arises. If you're able to locate this position, then focus on that position, and ask a question (i.e. a judgment). Do you notice a change in position?

foucault: Sorry, but I'm not sure what you're talking about. Did you post in the wrong thread?

1)First point is inside my chest.
2)Second is above my left ear, directly inside the skull.
3)Third is exactly the opposite, above right ear, directly in the skull.
4)Different, seems to form an upside down triangle, where as the answer to the bonus exercise came directly from the center of said triangle(with lower point "activating" first, then right ear then left. Not sure if that means anything or im just wake n baked.
What are you getting at? I dont get it. haha

Thanks teeko.
This exercise is very interesting. There's a number of reasons why we'll have different answers to these questions, but one of the most mundane reasons is our varied understanding of the phrases like: inner voice, manifestation of thought, and the judging of thought. Not only that, but I suppose many will get stuck on the definition/understanding of "thought."
I will clarify what I mean by inner voice. Our inner voice represents the internal monologue that takes place within all of us. Another representation of it is internal speech, and our stream of consciousness (i.e. thinking in words).
Does thought arise from the whole brain, or only part of the brain? Is thought judged by the whole brain, or only part of the brain? Can we feel thought as it arises? Can we feel thought as it's judged? These are just a few questions to help some of you out.

my inner voice is located in the same place my physical voice is located. its almost like i am speaking with my vocal chords, but they are not moving. their origin? i cannot pinpoint. almost like its an abstraction. perhaps the top left and right back of my head??? i dunno...
my judgement seems to be in my stomach.

I think that most of us are conditioned to believe that thought and consciousness are centered in the brain (head), due mostly to that the fact that speech, hearing and sight are located there. It has been a long time since I have meditated but when I was doing it daily it was mind blowing.
My answers to your questions would be: above and behind my head, maybe a foot or so, up to 3 feet for all.
Nice thread.

The dialogue comes from my mind, the judgment comes from other minds and the deep thoughts come from The Mind. All the same mind though, ahhhh?

I can tell you that emotions seem to come from my chest area, as though they are flowing up from my lungs into my brain. Other than that, everything seems to come from my head, and all perhaps in separate places in there, but for some reason I am unable to locate where each one is coming from.

Hey!
That's were my Walrus always goes when he smokes Salvia(every time, behind and slightly above his head)! It DOES always seem like he goes to the place were everything is "processed".
Very, very interesting. A potential key part in the explanation of "What the hell goes on in there?".

I cannot feel a place. Only imagine feeling a place. We have no evolutionary need for a sense of sensing thoughts in ourselves.
It would only focus as a distraction.
If something I say does not apply to you, that does not mean that I have failed, nor does it mean you have. There is no problem as long as someone benefits - in a world with as many people as ours, someone somewhere will benefit. Even if it is only me.
