Ephedrine Extraction - Soaking in Methanol -
7th April 2006, 01:53 AM
I was reading through a few teks for extracting pseudoephedrine from sudafed nasal congestion pills. The best tek I found recommends putting 10 pills in a pint size mason jar and adding a full bottle of Heet aka methanol.
I was wondering if theres a good reason for only putting 10 pills per jar and why it recommends using a full bottle of heet. Plus they dont even say what size bottle to use, Ive never seen pint bottles of methanol. Only the gallons and the smaller bottles.
My friend seems to think you can just dump a hundred pills in a quart jar then fill the rest with methanol. The end product he obtained last time looked like mashed potatoes when he was drying it but it never dried fully into powder/crystals, it stayed in big chunks so im guessing it wasnt pure ephedrine.
Is my friend going about it the wrong way? Does he need to put less pills and more methanol per jar?

ok....first...heet is retarted unless you distill it first it has wayyyyy to many lubricants and other additives in it to be doing that with...try useing some naptha.....warm naptha to be exact...and why they use only 10 pills maybe it's becuase maybe menthanol can only hold so many mg of pseudoephedrine and how do you get ephedrine our of pseudoephridrine with a np solvent w/ an a/b extraction and even then i dont think it's possible...and for what are you tryin to do this for anyways? make meth.....it's not like your just gunna take straight pseudoephridrine do you have that much sinus pressure?

 Lol
SWIM used to like Ephedra extract which is hard to find these days in sufficient doses for a reasonable price. Being the plant material is still readily available for fair prices, what is the best basic method of extracting ephedrine alkaloids from raw plant material?

The stems of most members of Ephedracae aka Ma Huang, Mormon Tea, Ephedra varieties altissima, americana andina, distachya, equisetina, foliata, fragilis, gerardiana, intermedia, major, nevadensis, pachyclada, sinica, torreyana, triandra, trifurca, viridis, etc all contain various amounts of Ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norephedrine and norpseudoephedrine most ranging from 0.5 to 2.5% ephedrine of dry twigs. SWIM picked up a nice plant at a local nursery, A delicious tea can be made by steeping the green or dried twigs in boiling water until they turn an amber or pink color. Ephedrine is salt like alkaloid that appears as shining white crystals and is very soluble in water. Most standardized extracts are 8% or approximately 5x. I was curious as to the most efficient method of extraction which maybe preformed with out special equipment. I am thinking water and possible ethanol would be sufficient but maybe not the most efficient. BTW, the FDA bans foods and drugs meant for human consumption, not plants.

You are right Brujo. I just miss original formula Xenadrine, not to mention some of the vendors custom stacks that used to contain Ephedra extract that were outstanding. I will stick with the tea.
